Muscle Energy Techniques for Massage Therapists

By Kasie Tedrick CSCS, LMT, MTI

Course Description: The Muscle Energy Technique (MET) online course is designed for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their manual therapy skills by applying MET. This technique is a form of osteopathic manipulative treatment that involves the voluntary contraction of a patient's muscles against a counterforce applied by the practitioner. MET improves musculoskeletal function and alleviates pain by mobilizing joints, stretching tight muscles and fascia, and improving circulation.

Course Objectives: By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the principles and physiological basis of the Muscle Energy Technique.
  2. Identify indications and contraindications for the use of MET.
  3. Perform a basic assessment to determine the suitability of MET for various musculoskeletal conditions.
  4. Apply MET to specific body regions, including the cervical, thoracic, lumbar spine, pelvis, and extremities.
  5. Integrate MET into a broader treatment plan for patients with acute and chronic musculoskeletal issues.
  6. Evaluate the effectiveness of MET and adjust techniques based on patient response.
